Modeling Tutorial

Pikachu

I will only show you how I did Pikachu and won't bring up details so a good understanding of 3DS Max is required.
Download the images I used as reference here.

Head

First I created a sphere to cover Pikachus' head. Then I added a 4x4x4 FFD modifier. I shaped the head in the front
viewport by moving the Control Points. Then I switched to the left viewport and did the same thing there but this time with
Edit Mesh. In the front viewport I then deleted the right side of the face.

Nose

I created a triangular spline in the front viewport, mirrored a copy and finally attached the two shapes. Then I added
an Extrude modifier with 0 in amount.

Eye

For the eye I created a sphere with a hemsiphere value of 0,5 and a cylinder as the base. The spherematerial has
a opacyvalue of 15 and the cylindermap a gradientmap as the diffuse.

I also used a cylinder for the red cheeck.

When I was done I manipulated the different objects' Pivot Points, placed them in the middle and mirrored.
All that's left now is the ears.

When I first tried modeling Pikachu I only had one picture with him facing front. From the side the model looked like
a yellow ... thing. My advice is: whenever you try to create a realistic model of an existing object allways have
images or similar to help you.
